The Open Web Is Closing. Your Creator Data Goes With It.

Every platform is bolting a door this year. The agencies that win own the keys they can't take back.

The Open Web Is Closing. Your Creator Data Goes With It.

Instagram killed Basic Display. TikTok funneled collab into TikTok One. Meta narrowed its APIs. The doors a Creator's data used to walk through are bolting shut — and the brands still assuming personal-account access are building on sand.

There was a stretch — call it 2016 to about 2022 — when a Creator's data flowed pretty freely. Personal accounts, open APIs, scrapers nobody policed. That era is over, and most brand decks haven't caught up.

The doors are bolting, one by one.

Instagram retired Basic Display. Meaningful access now runs through professional and creator accounts, the marketplace, or app-review-gated surfaces. TikTok folded collaboration into TikTok One and put a data-residency question mark over every campaign run on it. YouTube's partner surfaces matter, but treating them as broadly extractable is a fast way to a cease-and-desist.

None of this is a glitch. Platforms learned that the graph is the product, and they're not handing it out anymore.

When the platforms close the doors, owning your own memory is the only key that still works.
The graph is the product now. Nobody's giving it away.
The graph is the product now. Nobody's giving it away.

So what's actually defensible?

Not the biggest scraper. The operator who holds cross-platform creator records, rights memory, and campaign learning the platforms can't lock away. That's portable. That compounds. That's yours.

In the wild: the format that traveled.
